History

160 years ago, diplomatic relations between France and Japan were established. This 160th anniversary coincides with the 150 years of the beginning of the Meiji era, a period marked by the opening of Japan to the West. After the treaty of friendship and commerce signed in Edo in 1858, the old Tokyo, the relations open between the two countries. By opening up to the West, Japan is embarking on the path of profound transformations, while the trend of Japanism is sweeping through Western artistic circles. In the land of the rising sun, the changes are felt in many areas, political, military, economic, social, scientific, technical. On the cultural level too, it adopts trends from Europe and of course from France. Today, the Japanese are still great fashion lovers or of course French gastronomy, for example.

In France, the craze manifests itself from the 19th century through the taste of collectors and artists for prints and Japanese art objects. The Department of Prints of the National Library of France testifies, with a volume of the Manga of Katsushika HOKUSAI acquired since 1843. When Japan participates for the first time at the World Exhibition in 1867 in Paris, its pavilion presents its traditional architecture and thousands of arts and crafts, generalizing interest in Japanese art.

 

His influence can be seen in many areas, from decorative arts to fashion, theater, literature, cinema and, of course, the arts. Japanese prints, especially those of Katsushika HOKUSAI, Utagawa HIROSHIGE and Kitagawa UTAMARO, appeal to French artists, from Charles BAUDELAIRE to Auguste RODIN, Victor Hugo and, of course, the Impressionists. We find the influence of Japanese art in the works of Claude MONET, Edgar DEGAS, Edward MANET or Auguste RENOIR.

Since then, far from fading, the interest of the two countries for each other has continued to grow in many areas. Japan Expo is an eloquent example of the French attachment to Japanese culture, paying homage to it edition after edition and gathering thousands of lovers of Japan and its culture.
